Sattler in Mostar: Elections are an opportunity to turn a new page

MOSTAR, 11 December (FENA) - Head of the European Union Delegation to BiH and EU Special Representative Johann Sattler visited Mostar on Friday to present a PCR device to the University Clinical Hospital Mostar and to meet with members of the Mostar Election Commission and young people in Mostar.

“In the past eight months, the European Union has provided support in the fight against coronavirus, including five million euros provided for procurement, and most importantly, I received the green light to continue this support in 2021, because the needs still exist. The support will, among other things, include the purchase of vaccines,” Sattler said in a press statement.

During his visit to Mostar, Sattler met with representatives of youth organizations and associations: OKC Abrašević, Youth Council, NDC and United World College Mostar, with whom he discussed the importance of citizen participation in the upcoming elections for the Mostar City Council, especially youth.

“We have the opportunity to turn a new page, open a new chapter, to make full use of the potentials available, to have a professional City Administration that will work on a range of issues, including issues such as the environment, wastewater treatment and numerous other issues,” Sattler pointed out.

He added that after twelve years, the people of Mostar finally have the opportunity to decide who will lead Mostar for the next four years, and called on all residents of the City on the Neretva to go to the polls in large numbers and ensure greater legitimacy of election results.

“Don't underestimate the power of your vote, go to the polls,” Sattler said.

He also commented on the observance of epidemiological measures during the elections, emphasizing that experience shows that it is possible to ensure security for all those who will go to the polls.

Asked to comment on Milan Tegeltija's announcement that he would resign as president of the BiH High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council (HJPC), Sattler welcomed the move.

“This is an opportunity for the HJPC to turn a new leaf in its work. We certainly need even more such positive moves, including moves that we have been insisting on for a long time, and which concern legislative changes. In particular, an amendment to the Law on the HJPC that will enable checks on the integrity of holders of judicial office, including the highest positions, but also members of the Council,” said Sattler.

Commenting on a letter from HDZ BiH President Dragan Čović to international officials regarding the elections in Mostar, requesting, among other things, that the Central Election Commission relocate all its capacities to Mostar and that the ballot counting center be in Mostar, Sattler he said he welcomed every effort made to improve, strengthen and transparency.

“It is the domestic institutions that will ultimately make the decision, but I repeat, I welcome every effort that is made to improve and strengthen transparency,” Sattler said.
