Mahmutović: We're witnessing widespread human rights violations in BiH

SARAJEVO, December 10 (FENA) - Deputy Minister for Human Rights and Refugees of BiH Dževad Mahmutović said in an interview with FENA, on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day, December 10, that respect for human rights in BiH is unsatisfactory. The seriousness of this issue is also indicated by the fact that this parameter will be one of the key ones on the basis of which the readiness of our country to become part of the European Union will be assessed.

The Deputy Minister emphasizes that this goal should not be seen as a mere formality but a way to raise the living standards of BiH citizens, i.e. to reach European standards.

“It is the only effective way to fight against emigration and a way for our new generations to build their future in BiH, and not outside it. That is the real vital national interest of all of us,” said Mahmutović.

Unfortunately, as he added, we are witnessing the ubiquitous violation of human rights in BiH in the areas of social and health care, education and the judicial system, which has been further aggravated by the current COVID-19 pandemic.

When it comes to respect for human rights, Mahmutović stated that one should keep in mind the fact that BiH is among the countries with the highest degree of adopted standards in the field of human rights protection.

“A gap has been created between lightly accepted international obligations and practices in the field of respect for human rights, which has resulted in the accumulation of unfulfilled obligations of the state starting with the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights and the obligation to prevent impunity and achieve justice and compensation 7,000 missing persons, equalization of the rights of vulnerable groups, adoption of a comprehensive social document in order to reduce poverty,” stated Mahmutović.

The high unemployment rate indicates that such measures are needed for all categories of our citizens.

“I would especially like to point out the returnees who are mostly denied access to the labor market, which is an obvious example of discrimination. The data on the percentage of returnees in government bodies and public companies is devastating, which also violates the Decision of the Constitutional Court on the constituency of the people of BiH, which obliges proportional representation of the people in accordance with the 1991 census,” said Mahmutović.

In order to provide direct support for the promotion and protection of human rights during this year, grant funds were provided to support the work of the Interreligious Council of BiH of 100,000 KM, the organization of the Red Cross of BiH - 150,000 KM, the Jewish Community in BiH - 15,000 KM, and realization of grant funds in the amount of 2.4 million KM which are intended for: promotion of human rights, integration of Roma, projects of national minorities, families of missing persons, persons with disabilities, victims of human trafficking, support to local communities for projects with emigrants…

International Human Rights Day is celebrated every December 10, the day the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948 and the nations of the world came together to try to bury the effects of World War II genocide once and for all and for the first time in human history recognized the right of all people to " life, liberty, and security of person".
