Čović sends a letter to Inzko: We must intensify dialogue and joint talks

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, December 1 (FENA) - President of the Croat People Assembly (HNS) and the Croat Democratic Union (HDZ) in BiH Dragan Čović sent a letter to High Representative Valentin Inzko, after both of them recently addressed members of the United Nations Security Council at Arria-Forum.

"I am grateful that we had the opportunity, before the world representatives and at the highest global level, before the UN Security Council, to present in our speeches all the obstacles and challenges facing our country, in order to make the necessary steps for Bosnia and Herzegovina's Euro-Atlantic perspective. I am convinced that together we must contribute to strengthening a more comprehensive dialogue on issues that the international and world public, for understandable reasons, sometimes do not fully understand, and as I said, because of the one-sided image and superficiality that is often presented to the same public. On the other hand, a complete and true understanding of the problem is in everyone's interest in Bosnia and Herzegovina. All our fears, anxieties, as common, but also specific problems that we face should be presented to the public and be exposed to its critical judgment," Čović wrote in the letter.

He also referred to Inzko's statements addressed to BiH public after his presentation in the Security Council, which, as he points out, drew his personal, but also the attention of the Croat people he represents.

"The legitimate representation and constituent status of the three peoples in our homeland is the constitutional merit on which the entire Dayton-Paris Peace Agreement and Annex IV are based which define the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Dissatisfaction, or to use the term you used in your interview, the frustration of the Croat people stems from the fact that our will as a constituent people was grossly violated not once, but three times, in the institution of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and twice during the formation of government in the Federation of BiH. In one of these cases, you played a crucial role," it is said in the letter.

However, I deeply believe, says Čović, that now is a new time and a new opportunity to do the right thing, improve our own actions, strengthened by deep thought, valuable experiences, desire for partnership in solving problems and getting out of the vicious circle of conflict, fear, accusations and blackmail.

"After many years spent in my homeland of BiH, you will surely recognize that the BiH Election Law is full of shortcomings and that, among other things, it allows violating the electoral will of a constituent people, that it discriminates against citizens of Croat, Serb and Bosniak nationality in the population of BiH who make up about 97% percent of the total population, as well as according to members of minorities (which collectively includes the constitutional category of the "Others" with a share of about 3%). You will agree that constitutional and institutional violence, threats of majoritarianism, assimilation, outvoting, elimination from power, and even denial of identity as such are an insurmountable obstacle and unacceptable form in the context of European civilization achievements and standards," Čović emphasized.

He used this opportunity to remind the High Representative of the official data of the 2018 General Elections, "in which I personally won the absolute support of the Croat people."

"It is there, as you use the metaphor, in the "Bavarian" cantons with a Croat majority, I won convincing support and legitimacy to represent my people, with the generous and equally important support of Croats from other areas of the FBiH. This makes me not only especially proud today, but it gives me the obligation, strength and motivation to finally solve these real problems together and in the interest of Bosnia and Herzegovina," says the president of the HDZ BiH in a letter to Valentin Inzko.

I deeply believe, Čović continues, that in the period that follows we must intensify dialogue and joint talks in order to reach a rational solution, "and leave behind the constitutional violence and discourse that is typical of the representatives of the "majority" people far behind us."
