'Gender and Police in BiH' roundtable helps to assess situation of BiH police

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, November 27 (FENA) - A roundtable "Gender and Police in BiH", which helped look at the state of gender equality in BiH police agencies and suggest steps for progress in that field, was held on November 19 and 20 on Mount Jahorina within the project "Police and Respect for Human Rights in BiH", funded by the European Union.

Leaders and representatives of police agencies from all levels of government, representatives of non-governmental organizations and the academic community, had the opportunity to learn about international experiences and good practices in the field of gender equality in police structures.

The experiences of the countries from the region, which were shared by the representatives of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Croatia and the Police of the Republic of Slovenia, were especially valuable. Dr. Amrita Kapur, from the Geneva Center for Security Sector Management, pointed out to the participants that modern police agencies should be a mirror of the entire population, and that such an approach is the best solution for the various security needs of citizens. Kapur pointed out that mixed and diverse police teams are far more efficient in providing services and that they contribute to the wealth of skills available to the police in their daily work.

She pointed out that the gender budget of police agencies is crucial, because if financial resources are not provided, then initiatives for gender issues will not be implemented, the CSS said.

President of the Association "Network of Police Officers" Kristina Jozid pointed out that achieving gender equality in police structures is a long-term process that cannot be solved overnight, and that trainings, seminars and roundtables are a good start for finding solutions to these issues.

The project "Police and Respect for Human Rights in BiH" is funded by the European Union with the aim of promoting gender equality in police agencies, promoting the role of women in the police, and improving respect for human rights in the exercise of police powers. The project is being implemented by the "Center for Security Studies" Sarajevo, the Association "Network of Police Officers" Sarajevo and the Geneva Center for Security Sector Management.
