CEC BiH: Basic information on Local Elections 2020, taking place on November 15

SARAJEVO, November 11 (FENA) - Local elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2020. For the first time, the elections are being held in the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Central Election Commission of BiH announced today that compliance with the prescribed epidemiological measures must not be an obstacle to the legal conduct of the election process.

Polling stations will be open from 07:00 to 19:00 hrs. With the showing of a valid identification document (identity card, driver's license, passport) at the polling station, the voter receives a combination of ballots and exercises the right to vote. The secrecy of the vote is ensured at the polling station, stated the CEC.

Voters can check the location of their polling station by visiting the CEC BiH website www.izbori.ba.

The CEC reminds that in the 2020 local elections, the voters will elect: 64 municipal councils in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, 56 municipal assemblies in the Republika Srpska, 120 mayors in BiH, 14 city councils in the Federation of BiH, seven city assemblies in the Republika Srpska, 22 mayors in BiH and the Assembly of the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Guaranteed seats for members of national minorities are provided in 21 municipalities for 23 candidates.

For the first time in the local elections in BiH, the mayor of the City of East Sarajevo is elected directly, in accordance with the amendments to the Election Law of the entity of Republika Srpska.

543 political entities are participating in the elections - 129 political parties, 262 independent candidates, 72 coalitions, nine lists of independent candidates, 71 independent candidates for national minorities.

In the following basic constituencies, there is only one verified candidate on the ballot for the mayor: Domaljevac-Šamac, Orašje, Teočak, Mrkonjić Grad, Jezero, Olovo, Grude, Ravno and Usora.

A total of 3,283,380 voters were entered in the rounded up Central Voters Register (as of October 1, 2020, at midnight), as follows: the number of regular voters is 3,141,257; the number of displaced persons voters voting in absentia 7,925; the number of voters with the status of a displaced person who votes in person 14,059; the number of voters voting in BiH diplomatic and consular missions 704; the number of voters voting by mail 102,377 and 17,058 voters are registered to vote through a mobile team (these are regular mobile teams, not the special ones in the case of COVID-19, the CEC BiH will have a report on this after the election).

The CEC BiH reminds that one polling station each will be opened on November 15 this year in the Embassy of BiH in Vienna, the Honorary Consulate of BiH in Graz, the Consulate General of BiH in Stuttgart, the Consulate General of BiH in Munich, the Embassy of BiH in Oslo, the Embassy of BiH in Belgrade and the Consulate General of BiH in Chicago.
