Podžić participates in an online conference on 'Women, Peace and Security'

SARAJEVO, November 6 (FENA) - Minister of Defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sifet Podžić participated today in an online conference on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which calls for increased participation and full involvement and contribution of women in conflict prevention and resolution and in building peace and security.

Since the adoption of Resolution 1325 "Women, Peace and Security", activities have been carried out in BiH to raise awareness of the importance of the role and participation of women in conflict resolution and peace-building and security processes.

On this occasion, the Agency for Gender Equality of the BiH Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees, the OSCE Mission to BiH, the Office of the EU Special Representative in BiH and UN Women BiH called on key actors to record progress and recommit to future accelerated UN implementation of the Resolution 1325, and the building and preservation of peace and security.

The thematic online conference, held today, is one of the contents marking this jubilee.

In the introductory part of the conference, Minister Podžić addressed his satisfaction with participating in today's conference, with special thanks to the Agency for Gender Equality in BiH for organizing this activity, as well as for the support and assistance provided by BiH Ministry of Defense to affirm gender equality in the defense system.

Podžić stated that Resolution 1325 is the first Security Council Resolution that specifically addresses the impact of war on women and girls and women's contribution to conflict resolution and sustainable peace and that the special significance of Resolution 1325 is that it calls for women's participation in decision-making processes, conflict prevention, post-conflict processes, peace negotiations and peace operations.

It is a resolution that indicates the special needs of women and girls during war conflicts, the need for their protection, and is in the function of preventing and punishing sexual and any other violence against women.

The Minister of Defense added that the representatives of the BiHMoD actively participated in the working groups for the development of Action Plans for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in BiH, and the Action Plans for the implementation of UN Resolution 1325 in BiH defined goals and activities, vital for the implementation of this resolution in BiH.

BiH Ministry of Defense appointed a person for gender issues and a gender equality policy was adopted, while topics in the field of gender equality were included in the Training Plans of members of the Armed Forces of BiH.

In addition to Minister Podžić, the audience was addressed by the Minister of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH Miloš Lučić, Head of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina Kathleen Kavalec, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to BiH Ekaterina Dorodnova, Head of the Development Cooperation Department of the Swedish Embassy in BiH Torgny Svenungsson and UN Resident Coordinator in BiH Ingrid Macdonald, the PR Office of the BIH MoD announced.
