Sarajevo historical core and Old Mosque in Turija declared national monuments

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, November 2 (FENA) - The Commission for the preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina today adopted a Decision to designate the "Historic urban landscape of Sarajevo" as a National Monument of BiH.

"The diversity in a relatively small area, accentuated by the natural location of the city in a narrow valley along the Miljacka River and clearly visible intertwining of tangible and intangible heritage has necessitated recognizing the city center as a historic urban landscape. The center of the city of Sarajevo was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 1997 as a unique symbol of universal multiculturalism - a permanently open city. The site was also, until the final decision of the Commission for the preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, entered on the Provisional List of National Monuments, the Commission said in a statement.

The decision to designate the “Historical urban landscape of Sarajevo” as a National Monument of BiH was made on the basis of the Principles and Guidelines for the Preservation of National Monuments and UNESCO documents on the subject of the landscape.

At its 40th session, the Commission also decided to designate the architectural ensemble of the Old Mosque in Turija, Lukavac Municipality, as a National Monument.
