SIPA arrests two war crime suspects in the area of Banja Luka

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 27 (FENA) - On the orders of the prosecutor from the Special Department for War Crimes, the SIPA police officers in the area of Banja Luka located, identified and arrested Boško Unčanin (1969) from Prijedor and Dragan Despot (1964) from Ključ (Lanište), suspected of crimes against humanity.

Unčanin and Despot are under investigation by the Special Department for War Crimes of the BiH Prosecutor's Office and are suspected of acting contrary to the provisions of the Geneva Conventions on the Protection of Civilian Persons during a large-scale and systematic attack on Bosniak civilians in the wider Bosnian Krajina region during the war.

They are charged that on 1 June 1992, in Velagići, Ključ Municipality, they personally and directly, together with other persons, and by prior arrangement, expelled Bosniak civilians who were detained in the primary school building.

The expelled civilians were ordered to line up in front of the school, after which the accused, along with other persons, killed at least 78 victims, whose bodies were transported by trucks and buried in a mass grave, so that immediately after the war, in 1996, the remains were found and exhumed from the Lanište II mass grave, the Prosecutor's Office of BiH said.

During the day, the suspects - Unčanin and Despot - will be handed over to the acting prosecutor for questioning, and then decide on further activities in the case.
