SARAJEVO, October 23 (FENA) - The permanent exhibition "Review of the Work and Contributions of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY)" was officially opened tonight in the Sarajevo City Hall. Sarajevo Mayor Abdulah Skaka, Director of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in BiH Sven Petke and Chairman of the City Council of the City of Sarajevo Igor Gavrić opened the exhibition.

The opening ceremony featured short video messages on crimes before the ICTY, the work of The Hague Tribunal and its establishment, as well as the mandate and activities of the ICTY Information Center of the City of Sarajevo.

It is stated that the setting with an authentic courtroom in which the most serious war crimes were tried, which was handed over by the Tribunal, will represent a unique museum space in the City Hall.

Chairman of the City Council, Igor Gavrić, stated that this closed the project of the Information Center on the ICTY of the City of Sarajevo, which was completed by setting up a permanent exhibition.

IRMCT Chief Prosecutor and UN Human Rights Special Rapporteur (OHCHR) Serge Brammertz said in a video message that the ICTY had achieved significant results after 25 years of activity and largely met expectations.

"Our investigations and prosecutions have documented the crimes committed in great detail, proving that many of them were part of horrific ethnic cleansing campaigns," Brammertz said.

IRMCT President Carmel Agius also addressed via video message, stating that the exhibition represents the determination of the City of Sarajevo and the Information Center staff to explore innovative ways of presenting the work of the ICTY to anyone interested in learning more, and invited everyone to see the exhibition as an opportunity to actively learning, conversation and memory.

UN Resident Coordinator in BiH Ingrid Macdonald said that the ICTY has contributed to resolving a number of key issues on the road to reconciliation, as well as removing harmful narratives of collective guilt.

"Thanks to many witnesses who came out to testify, their courage to testify, we now have very comprehensive archives of documentation that testify to how civilians and others were treated and how the perpetrators treated them and ignored international law," Macdonald said.

The permanent exhibition was opened on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, which passed a resolution on the establishment of The Hague Tribunal in 1993.

With a museum complex, a library with a valuable book collection of the Tribunal, and ceded certified judgments from The Hague, the ICTY Information Center Sarajevo will function at full capacity.

Visitors will be able to use these resources of the Center free of charge.
