CEC and prosecutors in BiH determined to prevent electoral abuses

SARAJEVO, October 21 (FENA) - The Central Election Commission (CEC) of BiH, organized an online meeting today with representatives of the prosecutor's offices in BiH. More than 30 participants attended the meeting including Gordana Tadić, Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH, representatives of entity, cantonal, district prosecutor's offices and the Prosecutor's Office of the Brčko District of BiH, Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec, Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH and representatives of the EU Delegation to BiH and the US Embassy in BiH. 

At the beginning of the meeting, Željko Bakalar, President of the Central Election Commission of BiH, informed the participants that the Central Election Commission of BiH made a decision on the actions of the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to ensure accuracy, timeliness and integrity of excerpts from the Central Voters’ Register for voting outside Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as the prevention of abuses related to voting outside Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During her address, Chief Prosecutor Gordana Tadić pointed out that the Prosecutor's Office of BiH had given priority to work on cases of abuse in the election process, and stated that investigations were ongoing.

Zekerija Mujkanović, Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office of the Brčko District of BiH, informed the participants of the meeting about the numerous activities carried out by that Prosecutor's Office in connection with abuses in the election process, which other participants of the meeting assessed as very useful for their future actions.

Today's meeting was aimed at exchanging information, agreeing on further action in criminal cases related to abuses in the election process.

The meeting was assessed as very constructive and five conclusions were adopted.

The first conclusion states that a general consensus has been reached on the implementation of the Conclusion of the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council, which draws the attention of all prosecutor's offices in BiH to cases related to abuse of suffrage, falsification of election and voting results, determination of accurate results and other cases which can have a significant impact on the integrity of the electoral process, are defined as a priority in the work of these institutions before, during and sometime after the election, until the announcement of the final election results.

A rapid mutual exchange of information is needed in order to carry out investigations effectively. In order to implement this conclusion, the institutions will appoint a contact person in order to enable direct and quick contact, it is stated in the second conclusion.

The following conclusion states that the Central Election Commission of BiH will forward the reports to the competent prosecutor's offices in BiH for action as soon as possible.

All participants in the meeting agreed to insist on prosecuting all abuses in the election process, as well as preventing all abuses in the election process.

The fifth conclusion states that after the elections, it is necessary to intensify cooperation between the Training Center of the Central Election Commission of BiH and the entity centers for training of judges and prosecutors in order to educate prosecutors on the complexity of the election process and abuse in the election process.

The participants in the meeting agreed that the meeting should send a strong message to the public that there is a strong commitment of the competent institutions to protect the BiH Election Law, the rights arising from it and the election process as a whole, stated the Press Service of the BiH CEC.
