SARAJEVO, October 19 (FENA) - The Srebrenica genocide is a planetary issue, a test of human conscience and one of the most important ethical issues in modern European and world history, including many other issues awaiting a relevant answer, along with scientific and objective historical valorization.

This was emphasized today in Sarajevo as part of the opening of the International Scientific Conference "Genocide against Bosniaks, Srebrenica 1995-2020: Causes, Scales and Consequences", organized by the University of Sarajevo, University of Tuzla, Institute for Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law of the University of Sarajevo and the Institute of History of the University of Sarajevo.

The scientific gathering is an opportunity to elaborate on various aspects of the most serious crime committed on the European soil after World War II, a crime that, in addition to genocide against Bosniaks, resulted in the destruction of social, historical, political, cultural and spiritual life in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Rector of the University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj, greeted the participants of the conference and emphasized the importance of establishing scientific facts, i.e. the truth about Srebrenica so that it would never happen again to anyone.

“The events in Srebrenica that bloody July (July 9-19, 1995), regardless of numerous attempts, are impossible to translate into the language of reality we know. As a human being, we naively believed that after Auschwitz and the Holocaust, the genocide of such proportions could never happen to anyone, that in just a few days more than 8,372 people would be executed only because they had a different ethnic and religious identity,” said Škrijelj.

Rector of the University of Tuzla, prof. Dr. Nermina Hadžigrahić, herself a witness to the crimes committed in that eastern Bosnian town, assessed that Srebrenica has become synonym for human suffering, a dark moment of humanity.

Director of the Institute for Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law prof. Dr. Rasim Muratović stated that the aim of this conference is to make a scientific contribution to what happened in Srebrenica in July 1995, including a 'written trace' in the form of a collection of papers, which will, among other things, result in its work.

Director of the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center, Emir Suljagić, assessed that the conference is an opportunity to talk about Srebrenica not only in July, the month in which the anniversary of the genocide in that city is being marked.

The conference was also welcomed by representatives of the BiH authorities, who expressed their readiness to support projects aimed at establishing the truth about what happened in BiH during the aggression (1992-1995).

A letter of support from the Raisu-l-ulama of the Islamic Community in BiH, Husein effendi Kavazović, was read at the conference, in which, among other things, he states that Srebrenica, because of everything that has been done and turned into a city - a symbol of suffering, should be given a special status.

The High Representative in BiH Valentin Inzko, also sent the letter of support in which he is recalling the verdicts of domestic international courts establishing genocide in and around Srebrenica and calling for building the state of BiH that its citizens deserve - peaceful, tolerant and stable.

Eminent scientists from 12 countries, including the United States, the Netherlands, Norway, France, the countries of the region and Bosnia and Herzegovina attend the International Scientific Conference.
