FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 19 (FENA) - Twelve police agencies from Bosnia and Herzegovina with the Coordination Committee for control of small arms and light weapons destroyed 1,864 small arms and light weapons with their parts and components at the Steel Smelter "Jelsingrad" in Banja Luka.

In this way, they reaffirmed BiH's commitment to contribute to the international framework for arms control, the security of its citizens, as well as regional and international security and stability.

Small arms and light weapons were collected by police agencies through regular law enforcement activities, while a certain amount of weapons was voluntarily handed over by citizens.

The goal of the event is to increase general security and safety, as well as to combat the risk of the proliferation of small arms and light weapons by contributing to the reduction of the number of illegal weapons in BiH.

This activity contributes to the Strategy for the control of small arms and light weapons in BiH, but also to the implementation of the Regional Roadmap for the control of these weapons.

Since 2017, the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the support of the EU, UNDP BIH and UNDP SEESAC, have destroyed more than 18,500 small arms, light weapons with their parts and components.

The European Union (EU) through UNDP SEESAC, funded this activity with the support of the UNDP office in BiH, the UNDP in BiH said.
