SARAJEVO, October 14 (FENA) - Indictments in high-level corruption cases will be filed by the end of this year, Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina Gordana Tadić announced today during a hearing before the Ad hoc Inquiry Commission of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly formed to assess the situation in the judiciary.

In her introductory address, she paid special attention to the need to change the laws concerning the work of courts and prosecutor's offices, and noted that it is the deputies who can propose legislative changes, especially in the part related to corruption cases.

She believes that the problem of corruption in BiH is highly important and these cases have priority in the work of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH, but in order to adequately respond to that, we needs changes to the BiH Criminal Code and a more precise criminal definition of corruption.

Member of the commission Zukan Helez (SDP) asked whether she was facing political pressure as the chief prosecutor, she said that she was used to it and that when someone accepts such positions, they must be ready for the pressure.

The problem arises when these sorts of pressures become threats to which I and my family are exposed. We have tightened security measures," she pointed out.

The Commission Chairman Damir Arnaut (Our Party) asked for an answer on whether the chief prosecutor reviews all indictments coming to the Prosecutor's Office of BiH, and Tadić explained that indictments are submitted to her for review, which is approximately 20 percent of indictments, mostly those related on terrorism, human trafficking and security breaches.

She also spoke about some problems in the Court of BiH, recalling that an indictment had been filed against eight senior officials of the Republika Srpska entity in the "Referendum" case, but the Court rejected the indictment, noting that only two of the 50 judges are working on the confirmation of indictments.

Arnaut reminded of the report of the senior independent legal expert of the European Union, Reinhard Priebe, in which it was clearly stated that there were no results in cases of high-level corruption, and Tadić said that he might have made a mistake and that this would change by the end of the year.

The Chief Prosecutor emphasized today that Bosnia and Herzegovina needs a Court of Appeals, that is, a supreme court instance, and that this is another shortcoming in the country's judicial system.

She refused to speak about the specific cases that are underway, but Tadić still explained why the Prosecutor's Office of BiH is dealing with the "Memić" case, but not the "Dragičević" case, saying that the two cases that caused a lot of public attention are not in the same phase.

In the "Memić" case, the father of the murdered young man Dženan Memić, Muriz Memić, filed a criminal complaint against organized crime, which is why the case is in the Prosecutor's Office of BiH, while in the case of the murdered young man David Dragičević the case has not been forwarded to the Prosecutor's Office.
