Čović: Regional talks are desirable, BiH should have all neighbors on its side

SARAJEVO, October 13 (FENA) - We had a friendly meeting with a working dinner and exchanged views on the European integration in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also on all regional topics. We concluded that BiH must have its own European path and that together with Serbia and other countries in the region we should look for ways to become the EU member as soon as possible, Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly and HDZ BiH President Dragan Čović told FENA after last night talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and BiH Presidency member Milorad Dodik in Belgrade.

Answering the question about the negative reactions from Sarajevo and the claim that the Serb-Croatian association is in progress, Čović said that he would not comment on such assessments, because they are common.

“If we hadn't met then some would have complained why we don't meet. When my colleague Izetbegović and I were in Zagreb, some of them commented why we went to Zagreb and not someone else. The assessment was that we would meet and talk, and I do not interfere in that, nor do I mind that President Vučić and colleague Izetbegović or someone else,” Čović said.

He adds that a week ago, at the session of the Collegium of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, he announced his departure to Belgrade and that the entire visit was very transparent.

“I am also the president of the HDZ BiH, so I informed my interlocutors about the preparations for the local elections when it comes to the party. We expect victory in all areas where Croats are the majority. Vučić is interested in a lot of things in BiH, because a lot of things bind him to BiH, from his roots onwards. It was a friendly conversation that in no way tarnishes the relations between the three peoples in BiH. It is known that he stands for the equality of the constituent peoples in BiH, their legitimate representation, respect for the Dayton Agreement,” said Čović.

According to him, the concept of regional talks should be continued and can bring a good result for everyone in BiH.

“We need to have all our neighbors on our side. If we want to do something useful in the foreign policy of BiH, we must know that our reach is not great and it should primarily be a good neighborly policy when it comes to all three neighbors. We must never underestimate this, because we have problems in conducting foreign policy. We have seen in the past period that we again have classic abuses when a representative of one policy saying what is in the interest of BiH. We must learn to implement the policies agreed within BiH. And we see what we have done in the past two years when we did not have such a policy,” Čović concluded.
