FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 8 (FENA) - Members of the Temporary Commission of Inquiry of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina for determining the situation in BiH judicial institutions held an online meeting today with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to BiH Matthew Field and the Head of the OSCE Mission in BiH Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec, announced the Press Service of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH.

Ambassadors Field and Kavalec welcomed the work of the commission, emphasizing that they strongly support institutional and parliamentary oversight of the work of judicial institutions. They stressed that judicial reform and the establishment of the rule of law are among the top priorities of the international community when it comes to continuing BiH's progress, and expressed hope that the work of the Temporary Commission of Inquiry would make a significant contribution to judicial reform and confidence in judicial institutions.

The members thanked for the strong support and great assistance provided by the Embassy of the United Kingdom and the OSCE Mission to BiH to the work of the Temporary Commission of Inquiry and informed the ambassadors about their work and results so far, emphasizing the healthy atmosphere and commitment to the goal of producing a quality report and proposing reforms that will contribute to improving the situation in judicial institutions in BiH.

Speaking about the problems in the work of judicial institutions in BiH, which were located during the hearing before the Commission, the members of the Temporary Commission of Inquiry mentioned the trend of politicization of senior officials in judicial institutions, abuse of justice in disqualification and intimidation of individuals, the interdependence of judicial officials as well as cases that have not been resolved for years and a lack of accountability for judicial officials who do not do their job.

They stressed the need to change the Law on the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council, especially in the direction of ensuring the full independence of the Office of the Disciplinary Prosecutor and enabling the process of selecting key people in the judiciary to be completely isolated from political pressures. They also pointed out the importance of amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code, which would strengthen the role of judges in investigative procedures, as well as the law on prosecutors.

All participants in this video meeting supported the established full transparency in the work of the Temporary Commission of Inquiry, whose work, as it was said, arouses great public interest.
