SARAJEVO, October 7 (FENA) - The police arrested Ivan Đurić, who is suspected of committing crimes against humanity including murder against Bosniak, Croat and ethnic Albanian prisoners who were illegally detained in the town of Brčko in 1992.
The State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) officers on Wednesday arrested Ivan Đurić, who is suspected of killing two Bosniak civilians and one Croat prisoner in 1992, at the Luka detention camp in Brčko, as well as committing other inhumane acts against prisoners, BIRN learns.
He is alleged to have committed the crimes during a widespread and systematic attack in the Brcko area as a member of a police intervention squad.
“He is suspected of crimes against Bosniak, Croat and Albanian victims, who were unlawfully detained at the Luka detention camp in Brčko in 1992, including crimes committed jointly with defendants prosecuted by the ICTY [International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia],” the state prosecution said in a statement.
The prosecution also said that Đurić is suspected, alongside Goran Jelisić, alias Adolf, and others, of beating detained Bosniaks, Croats and Albanians on several occasions, causing them permanent severe physical and mental injuries.
He is accused of torturing and abusing abuse detainees and robbing them of their money and clothes.
Jelisić, who described himself as the ‘Serb Adolf Hitler’, admitted he was guilty of several murders and other abuses in Brčko in his trial at the ICTY in October 1998.
He was sentenced to 40 years in prison and has been serving his sentence in Italy since 2003.
Đorđe Ristanić, the former president of the Crisis Committee and War Presidency in Brčko, is currently on trial at the Bosnian state court for committing crimes at the Luka detention camp in 1992, stated the BiH Prosecutor's Office.
