USAID finances reconstruction of facilities important for reconciliation in BiH

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 5 (FENA) - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has approved more than half a million KM for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of infrastructure facilities in nine local communities that will contribute to building reconciliation and trust and serve the common good of all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The rehabilitation of the facilities is planned within the PRO-Budućnost peacebuilding project (Trust, Understanding, Responsibility for the Future) implemented by the humanitarian organization Catholic Relief Services (CRS) with partners in 75 local communities.

- Through cooperation with local communities in the past seven years, we had the opportunity to learn what their priorities are and the renovation of facilities has proven to be one of them. We are happy to have been able to respond to these needs, but also to enter a new chapter of our project. We hope that by renovating the buildings of wider social significance, we will also contribute to the renewal of interpersonal relations," said the director of the PRO-Budućnost project, Majda Behrem-Stojanov.

It is planned that in the period from 2020 to 2022, a total of 25 infrastructure projects be approved, and each of the 75 local communities in which PRO-Budućnost operates will have the opportunity to apply for funds. USAID has set aside about 60,000 KM for individual projects, and local communities should participate with at least 20 percent of their own funds.

In 2020, educational, cultural, religious and sports facilities will be reconstructed, as well as parts of urban areas in Bosanski Petrovac, Breza, Livno, Bosanska Krupa, Sanski Most, Banja Luka, Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje, Novi Travnik and East New Sarajevo.

"This is not just a reconstruction of buildings - we want it to be a gathering place for people of all ethnic and religious backgrounds, minorities, marginalized groups, who will socialize, exchange opinions - even the opposing ones - and thus contribute to increased mutual understanding," said Behrem-Stojanov.

In 2020, educational, cultural, religious and sports facilities will be reconstructed, as well as parts of urban areas in Bosanski Petrovac, Breza, Livno, Bosanska Krupa, Sanski Most, Banja Luka, Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje, Novi Travnik and Istočno Novo Sarajevo.
