Overcoming the consequences of pandemic at the center of Germany's engagement

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 2 (FENA) - German Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Margret Uebber said today on the occasion of German Unity Day that overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences this year has been a great challenge for all, and it has also been at the center of politics and international engagement of Germany.

"This year is also a special year for German politics because this year Germany is taking on so many international obligations as never before. Until the end of the year, Germany will be a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Here, we are committed to strengthening the multilateral order and cooperating in overcoming conflicts and preventing conflicts. For us, however, it is of great importance to overcome global challenges such as climate change and its effects, non-proliferation of weapons and disarmament, respect for human rights and ultimately global health," said Uebber.

She reminded that her country took over the leadership of the EU Council on July 1 this year and that the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic also has been the focus of attention.

"As the EU presiding country, we want to contribute to the EU coming out of this crisis stronger and more resilient than it had entered it. It is necessary to stop the spread of the pandemic and to overcome its economic and social consequences. And for that to happen sustainably, we need to turn this renovation into green, sustainable rebuilding that we will, above all, support with sustainable investment. Only if we succeed, can we eventually create a chance for the future from this crisis," said Webber.

She added that the challenges are great and will probably last after the German presidency, but the way the EU has dealt with the crisis so far makes it a bit optimistic.

"No region around the world has shown as much solidarity as it was the case with the EU. That this solidarity extends not only to the EU itself but also to the neighborhood is shown by the extensive assistance that the EU, among other things, has made available to the countries of Western Balkans, so that they can better cope with the crisis and its consequences. This includes Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This support is not an end in itself. We have an interest in the stable and sustainable development of this region because the countries of the Western Balkans are in our immediate neighborhood. We are closely interconnected, whatever happens here in the region is reflected directly on the European Union and vice versa. And finally, the countries of the Western Balkans are striving for EU membership," said Uebber.

She emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina, with its application for membership in the European Union, has taken that path and that Germany is committed to the accession perspective for the countries of the Western Balkans and provides sustainable support for Euro-Atlantic integration of the region.

"With these 14 priorities from the EU Opinion, a plan for the path towards the EU has been clearly defined. Now, these priorities need to be implemented quickly and sustainably. In November this year, Germany will also take over the presidency of the Council of Europe. Here we want to be especially committed to respecting democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Because it is precisely in times of crisis that it is important to show that we still feel obliged to the fundamental values of the EU," Uebber pointed out.

She underlined that Germany will continue to be a good and reliable partner of our country on its path to Euro-Atlantic structures.

"In that sense, let us have a toast today in the name of the Day of German Unity and in the name of friendship between Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina," said Uebber, the German Embassy in BiH stated in a press release.
