MOSTAR, October 2 (FENA) - A two-day regional conference of Southeast European environmental activists called "Grassroots Action for Green Change" has started today, organized by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation - Regional Dialogue for Southeast Europe.
About twenty activists from the region gathered at the conference, and one of the goals of the Foundation and the program itself is to organize activities at locations where there is activism for environmental protection.
During the conference, activists will discuss new strategies in seeking environmental solutions and discuss a variety of key topics related to climate change and environmental degradation in our communities.
Director of the regional project of the 'Friedrich Ebert' Foundation, Ralf Melzer, said that he is familiar with environmental problems in Bosnia and Herzegovina and that he is aware that environmental problems do not exist only in BiH, but in all countries in the region.
“I am familiar with the situation and we are in contact with activists who are on the ground and helping to identify these problems, improve the situation and point them out. We are here today to meet and engage activists working in the field to identify problems that already exist. The reason for the meeting, conference and visit to Uborak is to raise awareness not only of the public, but also of those who make decisions related to these issues in political life,” Melzer added.
On that occasion, the conference was also attended by local activists from the citizens' initiative "Because it concerns us".
“All foreigners who come to Mostar recognize this problem. Everyone who has an insight into this situation sees how harmful it is for the citizens of Mostar, but unfortunately, our local authorities do not see it and ignore this problem. Of course, Mostar is not alone in environmental problems, however, this landfill is the closest to the city. Another problem why Mostar is specific is due to atmospheric conditions, winds, soil water permeability and similar problems,” said the President of the citizens’ initiative "Because it concerns us" Omer Hujdur.
On Saturday, October 3, after the completion of the planned program activities and panel discussions, the organizer prepared a tour to the Mostar landfill Uborak.
