TUZLA, October 2 (FENA) - The regulation of the Spreča riverbed could begin next year if the municipalities of Lukavac, Gračanica and Doboj Istok resolve property and legal issues in time and provide the necessary permits.

The Sava River Basin Agency secured five million euros for the regulation of the Spreča River through the UN Development Fund (UNDP).

At the meeting with the representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry of the TuzlaCanton, they presented the investments made so far, opened the issues of amendments to the FBiH Law on Waters and debts for water fees.

The flooding of the Spreča River and other watercourses in TC has caused millions of damages in the coastal area, where there are huge agricultural areas.

"This year, the Sava River Basin Agency worked in the municipalities of Doboj Istok, Lukavac, Srebrenik, the rivers Tinja and Spreča within its competence and completed the works, but next year we expect the continuation of works on both rivers," said the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Mustafa Šakić.

Within the project "Increasing investments in reducing the risk of floods in BiH" funded by UNDP in 2021, for the regulation of the Spreča riverbed in the area of Lukavac, it is planned to invest about one and a half million euros and about two and a half million euros for the area of Gračanica.

The cantons receive 45 percent from the water fees, the Sava River Basin Agency gets 40 percent, and the Environmental Protection Fund gets 15 percent. It is possible that this ratio will change after the amendment of the FBiH Law on Waters, which was sent into the parliamentary procedure.

The Government of the Tuzla Canton has accepted the initiative for the Spreča River to be under the jurisdiction of the Sava River Basin Agency throughout its entire course.

Also, there is another initiative for the City of Gradačac to take over the responsibility for Lakes Hazna and Vidara, in order to try to develop tourism in this area.
