Plakalo: Keep the optimism from Brussels and implement it

SARAJEVO, October 1 (FENA) – Secretary-General of the European Movement in Bosnia and Herzegovina Haris Plakalo expressed satisfaction with the views expressed and encouraging conclusions during yesterday's visit of members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina to official Brussels.

"The visit, however, was as I expected, with reasonable, responsible and effective views of all three members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the interest of all its citizens. It is an incentive that comes at a time of increasingly confronted attitudes and dissonance within the Presidency of BiH under the auspices of conducting more individual policy than the collective of all three members of the BiH Presidency," Plakalo said for FENA.

According to him, it is clear that it will not be possible to meet all 14 priorities from the four areas of Opinion of the European Commission for Bosnia and Herzegovina's membership in the European Union, but it is encouraging that some of them have been resolved or are on the way to resolution, such as abolition of death sentence in the RS, amendments to the HJPC law, the enactment of the conflict of interest law, the law on the origin of property, the adopted strategy for revising war crimes by the BiH Council of Ministers, and the elections in Mostar will finally be held.

“They are all certain elements from 14 priorities for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which again are not a condition for obtaining candidate status, but for starting negotiations with the EU, which is a status above the candidate status,” he stated.

He believes that the issue of joining the initiative "Mini Schengen" is certainly important, and it is encouraging when a consensus is reached in this regard, but it will require a deeper analysis of all that it represents for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“However, given that the experiences of the "Visegrad Group", which was formed in 1991 and entered the EU membership together as a group (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary) as a stronger and more competitive economic space, we can be guided by these positive examples, but first open issues must be resolved, such as between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Serbia when it comes to the final signing of the border agreement. In this context, I expect, if the optimism expressed during yesterday's visit of the Presidency of BiH to Brussels is maintained, it will be applied in practical terms, so that we can get candidate status in the spring of 2021,” said the Secretary-General of the European Movement in BiH commenting on yesterday's visit of members of the Presidency of BiH to Brussels.
