BiH has an obligation to implement State Strategy against Human Trafficking

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 30 (FENA) - Members of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly, gathered around the Club for European Integration and Security, which operates with the support of the International Republican Institute (IRI), in their reaction to the statement of US Ambassador to BiH Eric Nelson, expressed strong concerns about Bosnia and Herzegovina's failure to implement the BiH Strategy against Human Trafficking.

"We reiterate the importance of urgent action and measures taken by the competent authorities and institutions in BiH to implement the Anti-Trafficking Strategy and the adopted Action Plan, and thus meet the recommendations of the State Department report (TIP) that would prevent BiH from dropping to level three of the Monitoring list, which would result in the abolition of US Government's assistance to Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is stated in the statement of the Club for European Integration and Security of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The club added that the State Department's report on human trafficking for 2019 on the situation in BiH, among other things, states that the BiH authorities have not fully met the minimum standards for the elimination of human trafficking.

"The abolition of non-humanitarian, non-trade assistance of the US Government to Bosnia and Herzegovina, including USAID assistance in BiH, would have catastrophic consequences for BiH," the statement reads.

The members of the club call on all competent authorities in BiH to take all steps within their competences in order to more vigorously conduct investigations, prosecute and convict perpetrators of trafficking in human beings by imposing penalties appropriate to the gravity of this crime.

They note that BiH must develop policies, establish adequate cooperation with the non-governmental sector and provide financial resources to help victims of human trafficking.

The club expects more effective work of the Anti-Trafficking Task Force and better coordination among all relevant actors at the state and lower levels in order to substantially improve the fight against human trafficking and meet international obligations.

The statement reads that in the coming period, the Club for European Integration and Security plans to take a number of parliamentary initiatives aimed at putting this issue in the focus of the BiH Parliament.
