WWF urges world leaders to reverse the nature loss by 2030

FENA Press release

MOSTAR, 28 September (FENA) - Heads of state and government representatives from more than 65 countries and the President of the European Commission for the European Union, have committed to reverse the nature loss by the end of this decade. Bosnia and Herzegovina is, along with Slovenia, the only country in the region that have responded to this call and endorsed the pledge.

The Leaders’ Pledge for Nature: United to reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 for Sustainable Development sees leaders pledging to undertake urgent actions over the next ten years as part of the UN Decade of Action to achieve Sustainable Development. It comes days ahead of the UN Summit on Biodiversity, sending a strong, united signal that the world must step up ambition to halt and reverse nature loss for the benefit of people and nature and to help tackle climate change.

The Pledge, which will be officially launched at the Leaders Event for Nature and People today is a direct response to the need for urgent and immediate global action to address our interdependent biodiversity, climate and health crises.

In addition to Germany, Kenya, the United Kingdom, Colombia, Mexico, France and other countries, the Pledge is supported by a number of organizations and companies, such as WWF, GEF, the World Bank Chamber of Commerce, BirdLife International, Danone, etc.

The Leaders’ Pledge for Nature comes less than two weeks after the release of the UN’s Global Biodiversity Outlook 5, which indicates that since 1970, the size of populations of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles has been reduced by a worrying 68 percent. This was followed by the UN Biodiversity Outlook 5, which confirmed that the world is not on course to fully meet any of its decade-long Aichi biodiversity targets.

"The Pledge highlights that this accelerating crisis is causing irreversible harm to our life support systems, aggravating poverty and inequalities, increasing risk of future zoonotic pandemics and contributing significantly to climate change. The rising costs to societies and the economy require biodiversity loss to be halted and reversed with urgency, if we want to achieve our climate objectives and the Sustainable Development Goals. WWF Adria welcomes the decision of the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina to respond to the Pledge, which opens a window into a greener future for us," the WWF announced.
