SARAJEVO, September 27 (FENA) - The problem of migrants in Bosnia and Herzegovina will last for a long time, so a better plan and strategy is needed, said the author of the study "Asylum in the European Union and Bosnia and Herzegovina" Suvad Konaković.
That study should be published by the end of the year, and Konaković told FENA part of his research, emphasizing that BiH, due to its internal organization, can hardly answer this big problem.
He is of the opinion, like many theorists, that migration is the third biggest problem in the world, after terrorism and oil depletion.
“BiH has become an unattractive state that receives a large number of refugees, and it does not have enough strength to respond to that problem,” Konaković emphasized.
He added that BiH has a transit character on the route of migrants coming from different parts of the world.
“One route goes through Macedonia and Serbia in BiH, and the other through Macedonia and Montenegro. They mostly come from war-torn countries, such as Syria, Libya, Yemen. The main reason for the arrival of these people is the protection of life,” Konaković pointed out.
Apart from such, he adds, there are also migrants from poor countries, the so-called "economic migrants".
Konaković also investigated reports from the ministries of the interior, mainly the Una-Sana Canton and the Sarajevo Canton, where the crimes of migrants were recorded. He emphasized that these people, for the most part, did not come to create problems in BiH, but that this is happening because they are staying longer than planned.
He also considers the distribution of migrants in BiH to be wrong, stating that they are not sent evenly to all parts of the country, but mainly to Sarajevo and Bihać i.e. the Una-Sana Canton.
He also said that BiH is exposed to another problem, the departure of its residents. He said that 530,000 people left the country from 2013 to 2018, of which 83,000 renounced their citizenship.
