Turković and UNODC Executive Director: BiH is a priority for UNODC

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 23 (FENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bisera Turković talked yesterday in Vienna with the Director-General of the UN Office in Vienna and the Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Ghada Fathi Waly.

Minister Turković said that one of the three UNODC regional expert centers is located in Sarajevo and that the UNODC Program Office, which has recently been expanded, is also located in BiH.

Speaking about the main problems of our country, Minister Turković pointed out the daily arrival of migrants in BiH, among whom there are those who are prone to committing criminal acts. She added that BiH would be grateful for UNODC's assistance in border control, and for greater capacity in regional cooperation and data exchange.

Director Waly said that UNODC had successfully established a Control Unit at the Bijača border crossing and that they are currently establishing a new Unit at the Gradiška border crossing and the Sarajevo International Airport, which would strengthen border security in BiH.

UNODC will launch extensive anti-corruption activities in the region, and in this context will work with the BiH-based Regional Anti-Corruption Initiative. She stressed that BiH is a priority for UNODC, but that the entire region is of great importance, especially in the fight against drugs and human trafficking.

Minister Turković added that the newly appointed Minister of Security of BiH is ready for cooperation and that one of his priorities is a greater presence of UNODC in the region, and sent an official invitation to find opportunities for further cooperation, stated the PR Office of the BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
