NEL-1 evaluation of AFBiH Light Infantry Battalion Group begins

FENA Press release

BANJA LUKA, September 21 (FENA) - Members of the Light Infantry Battalion Group (INF-L-BNG) of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AFBiH) started a four-day exercise today at Combat Training Center in Manjača in order to perform NATO Evaluation (NEL-1) process under the Operational Capabilities Concept - Evaluation & Feedback Program (OCC E&F).

Members of the INF-L-BNG will be checked and evaluated by NATO assessors in the field of interoperability through an assessment exercise, the BiH Ministry of Defense announced.

This, as it is stated, implies checking the training, organization, structure and equipment of the declared units according to the NATO task list.

With the successful implementation of the NEL-1 exercise, the mentioned light infantry battalion group will complete the first level of the four-year assessment according to the NATO Concept of Operational Capabilities and become fully interoperable according to the NATO standards.

This is followed by the second level of a two-year combat readiness assessment, after which the unit is certified to participate in multinational operations led by NATO, European Union and United Nations.

"In order to achieve interoperability with the armed forces of NATO members and participate in building and maintaining peace in the region and the world, the Armed Forces of BiH in 2018 declared the Light Infantry Battalion Group. In November 2019, this unit successfully passed the SEL-1 assessment exercise (self-assessment) in accordance with NATO procedures, which was a prerequisite for the implementation of NEL-1," Ministry of Defense said in the statement.

The BiH MoD pointed out that the Concept of Operational Capabilities is a program that builds, achieves and verifies the interoperability and operational capability of declared units for participation in NATO-led operations.

So far, NATO assessors have assessed 11 AFBiH units (750 members) as combat-ready.

During the preparation and implementation of the exercise, all epidemiological and hygienic measures are respected, as well as the prescribed measures from the competent institutions, in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus. All participants in the exercise were provided with constant supervision by the competent medical services of the AFBiH, while the British Embassy in BiH donated funds for personal hygiene, BiH Ministry of Defense stated.
