LIVNO, September 17 (FENA) - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Bosnia and Herzegovina launched the "Local Works" project to help communities in BiH develop capacity that will enable sustainable growth, increase civic engagement and mobilize available local resources.
Five local implementers of the USAID project are the Center for Civil Cooperation Livno (CGS Livno), the Network for Building Peace, the Institute for Youth Development KULT, the Tuzla Community Foundation and the Mozaik Foundation, and will address development challenges in their own communities and the development of community philanthropy, the Network for Building Peace said in a statement.
"Activities supported under 'Local Works' will mobilize more local resources to address community priorities. The citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina want to address burning issues in their own backyards," said USAID BiH Mission Director Nancy J. Eslick.
She said that people who live in the community know best what to do and how to do it.
Activities within the Local Works will accelerate and improve local relations, and the project will build stronger organizations at the local level capable of serving as reliable actors in solving community problems in the future.
USAID and its local partners encourage local entrepreneurship to provide sustainability support to local civil society organizations and the opportunity to establish an Entrepreneurship Fund at the cantonal level.
USAID has invested a total of USD 12 million in the 'Local Works' project. In the initial phase, the project was funded by the local organization Institute for Youth Development KULT, for the implementation of community assistance programs in three regions in BiH, which until then were insufficiently supported by governmental and international development programs. The project has helped communities identify resources and assistance needed to address local development challenges, the statement said.
