SARAJEVO, September 16 (FENA) - Judge Joanna Korner said today at the online presentation of her report on the processing of war crimes cases at the state level in Bosnia and Herzegovina that the first thing to address is the revised State Strategy for War Crimes Cases.
The report states that, despite the fact that some of the recommendations from the previous Report made in 2016 have been implemented, many others have not been implemented.
The most urgent issues to be addressed include inefficient management practices in the BiH Prosecutor's Office and the failure of the Special Department for War Crimes of the BiH Prosecutor's Office to prioritize the most complex cases, leading to those most responsible for the most serious crimes not being brought to justice.
“It is in the interest of everyone, especially the public, that those who are most responsible for committing war crimes are tried as soon as possible, as well as those who ordered or did not prevent the commission of war crimes,” Korner emphasized.
She added that the Court and the Prosecutor's Office of BiH should focus on those suspects, but that this does not mean that the direct perpetrators of war crimes should avoid justice.
“Justice can be satisfied if the cases of direct perpetrators of war crimes are transferred to the cantonal and district level as soon as possible,” Korner underlined.
The Report also recommended that the investigation teams in the Prosecutor's Office of BiH be adequately restructured in order to ensure a clearer understanding of complex events in investigations and the most efficient use of human and material resources, and to improve the investigation process, indictment writing, and improving the management of the main trial to shorten its duration.
