Palmer with members of BiH PA on priority tasks of authorities in BiH

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 9 (FENA) - Members of the House of Peoples and the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiHPA) talked today with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and US Special Representative for the Western Balkans Matthew Palmer, who is on a two-day working visit to BiH.

During the opening of the meeting, the Speaker of the House of Peoples Nikola Špirić pointed out that the United States is an important partner of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in that light, Palmer's visit to BiH is appreciated as an opportunity for open exchange of views and ideas on the current state of affairs and future progress of BiH, BiH PA announced.

On behalf of the hosts of the meeting, Špirić emphasized the support of the people of the USA in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and special gratitude for the help that this friendly country provides.

Palmer pointed out that this year, as the year marking the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement is very important for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He added that this is a time when the responsible authorities in BiH should make a series of steps in various fields to send a message to all citizens, especially young people leaving BiH, that this is a prosperous environment where it is worth staying and fighting for a better future.

Special Envoy Palmer particularly emphasized the tasks related to the implementation of the Strategy for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings in Bosnia and Herzegovina 2020-2023, then the reform of public procurement, reform of the judicial system starting with the Law on the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council as a basis for restoring BiH citizens' trust in the judiciary, implementation of the National Strategy for Work on War Crimes Cases, amendments to the Law on Conflict of Interest, as well as the elimination of delays in the work of the Interdepartmental Working Group for Amendments to the Election Legislation.

Members of the Houses of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, presented their own views but also views of political parties they represent in the BiH PA on the mentioned reform areas, adding the need to intensify activities that will result in economic progress and stop the outflow of young and quality labor to countries with more developed democracies thus stopping the wave of migration, which is a growing problem for BiH.

However, as a basis for the success of these and all other reform processes, the need for much more intensive dialogue and greater mutual respect was emphasized, which, as it was said today, would inevitably contribute to the stabilization of opportunities and progress of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the process, actors from the international community have been highlighted as desirable partners, but it has been reiterated that the key to Bosnia and Herzegovina's progress is primarily in the hands of domestic political forces, it is said in the statement.
