SARAJEVO, August 30 (FENA) – Today, on the International Day of the Missing, families around the world will call for clarification of the fate of people who disappeared due to armed conflicts, natural disasters, crime, illegal migration and other causes.
To date, more than 70 percent of the 40.000 people reported missing at the end of the 1990s armed conflicts have been found and identified in the Western Balkans, using the most advanced scientific methods and technologies and multidisciplinary co-operation between judicial and investigative bodies, specialized institutions, forensic experts and families of the missing, but about 11.000 people are still missing.
Due to the situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), with the support of the UK Government and in cooperation with the heads of institutions in charge of searching for missing persons in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, organized a video campaign to increase public engagement on resolving the issue of persons still listed as missing.
The video message is sent jointly by Amor Mašović, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Missing Persons Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dragan Djukanović, President of the Commission on Missing Persons of the Government of Montenegro, Veljko Odalović, President of the Commission on Missing Persons of the Government of Serbia and Semina Alekić, Chair of the Steering Board of the Regional Coordination of Associations of Families of Missing Persons from the Former Yugoslavia.
According to Mašović, the problem is still the lack of information on the locations of graves of the missing, and the overall results in the search for the missing are additionally affected by the fact that a small number of close relatives of the missing have not yet expressed readiness to donate blood for DNA identification.
