Female police officers attend workshop on discrimination and sexual harassment

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, August 27 (FENA) - A two-day workshop on "Raising awareness of gender-based discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace", attended by 40 female police officers from police agencies across Bosnia and Herzegovina, began today on Mount Jahorina.

The workshop is realized within the project "Fight against gender-based violence in police structures in BiH", which is implemented by the Association "Network of Female Police Officers" (MPS) with the support of the Embassy of the United States.

“Aim of the workshop is to raise awareness of gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the police, and existing protection mechanisms, bearing in mind the fact that the survey showed that in police structures in BiH there is a large number of these cases and female police officers find it difficult to report them. The cause of such discrimination is most often gender inequality, which is especially pronounced in police structures where men are still predominantly represented,” stated the "Network of Female Police Officers" in a press release.

The workshop will address legislation, elements of gender-based violence and current protection mechanisms, with the aim of empowering women to recognize gender discrimination and sexual harassment and report it to the authorities.

In particular, it is pointed out that legal provisions require institutions to take appropriate measures to achieve gender equality and protection against discrimination, especially bearing in mind the Concluding observations of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on the Sixth Periodic Report of BiH on implementation of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

“Having in mind the fact that the police should be an example to other institutions in the fight against gender-based violence, both when taking measures and actions within their competence, and within their ranks, it is absolutely unacceptable that such cases are not reported and processed by the police,” it is said in a statement.
