Mijatović urges RS govt. to speed up the work on implementation of EC Opinion

FENA Press release

BANJA LUKA, August 26 (FENA) - Vice President of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) of BiH Vojin Mijatović called on the government of the entity of Republika Srpska to speed up its work on the 14 recommendations from the Opinion of the European Commission on BiH's application for EU membership which our country must implement in order to become a candidate for membership.

"The inhabitants of this entity, of all religions and ethnicities, want and deserve BiH's accession into the European Union, and no one has the right to block BiH's European path with their reluctance. I call on Prime Minister Radovan Višković to hold a special session of the government on the Opinion of the European Commission. We want a clear plan and vision of how, when and in what way the recommendations related to the competencies of the entity of Republika Srpska would be implemented," says Mijatović.

He also warned that one of the recommendations directly calls on the Republika Srpska to abolish the death penalty and that it was unacceptable that the RS was one of the few parts of Europe where the death penalty still existed. He also noted that the Opinion of the European Commission calls on all levels of government in BiH to cooperate on the implementation of the 14 recommendations.

"We must take Bosnia and Herzegovina to the EU, and if this government is not able to do that, let it resign and leave those executive positions to people whose interests are above the personal and partisan interests," the SDP said.
