Anniversary of the killing of 200 prisoners at Korićani cliffs marked today

FENA Press release

KORIĆANI CLIFFS, August 21 (FENA) - War veterans of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ARBiH), the Croatian Defense Council (HVO) and the Army of the Republika Srpska (VRS) paid tribute today to 200 killed Prijedor citizens at Korićani cliffs site in the territory of Skender-Vakuf, organized by the Center for Nonviolent Action Sarajevo-Belgrade.

On August 21, 1992, hundreds of captured Bosniak and Croat civilians from the Trnopolje camp were forced into buses. Some of the war camp detainees in "Trnopolje" were brought from the "Keraterm" and "Omarska" camps after the Serbian authorities made the decision to close those camps.

The convoy of buses and trucks was accompanied by police officers from the Prijedor police intervention platoon. The buses left the settlement of Tukovi and in front of the "Trnopolje" camp and joined a convoy in Kozarac. By order, they stopped at the Ugar River on Mount Vlašić, where, according to the indictment, more than 150 men were separated and executed, while 12 of them survived the shooting over a 200-meter-high cliff. In addition to the citizens of Prijedor, the remains of several civilians from Kotor-Varoš were also found at this site. Eleven members of the Intervention Unit of the Prijedor Police were convicted of the crime at Korićani cliffs.

“Korićani cliffs is one of the sites of mass killings of the non-Serb population of Prijedor, and by coming here we want to pay tribute once again to the victims and point out the importance of prosecuting those responsible for crimes and working to find the remains of victims. As war veterans, we feel a responsibility and an obligation to show respect to all victims and their families and to point out the importance of remembering the victims of such crimes. We once again point out that this locality is an unmarked place of suffering and we call on the competent authorities to allow the victims to mark this place,” said Amer Delić, a member of the Center for Nonviolent Action and a war veteran of ARBiH from Zavidovići.

Đoko Pupčević, a war veteran from Šamac, says that it is important to come to Korićani cliffs and pay tribute to the victims and see the places of suffering.

“I feel Prijedor as a special place because, after Srebrenica, so many innocent civilians died, who were robbed, imprisoned, killed… But, here, we as people want to pay tribute to all victims, especially civilians and that seems like an important step forward,” said war veteran of the Croatian Defense Council from Brčko, Ivo Andjelović, the CNA stated.
