Čerkez: Consequences for the health of citizens and economy depend on us

SARAJEVO, August 6 (FENA) - We are witnessing the biggest health and economic crisis that has left consequences all over the world, but the consequences for the health of population and economy depend on all of us, said FBiH Crisis Staff member Goran Čerkez at today’s press conference.

He points out that "we all need to work together to respond to probably the biggest challenge in our lives. We need to be responsible and implement the measures we have taken."

“We tried to stop the first wave of the pandemic, high mortality and consequences with lockdown, which many countries failed to do. We had among the top three answers in Europe and we avoided the black scenario. At that moment, we tried to strengthen the health care system, and we also tried to educate the population,” Čerkez reminded.

He stated that the FBiH Ministry of Health periodically loosened the measures and over time the situation with pandemic stabilized.

“We are trying to live with this virus because we can't be locked up all the time. The measures we have here are adopted more or less in all European countries, they are efficient and of high quality, and we could only adopt more restrictive measures. The current ones are quite restrictive, but they enable functioning of economy. If we had a closure again, we would be in a difficult situation to survive. Therefore, I do not believe that the Crisis Staff will reintroduce restrictive measures in the form of a lockdown,” he underlined.

He warns that, if the situation worsens, it will become more difficult every day. He therefore expects a stronger involvement of the Ministry of Interior and field inspections, in terms of implementation of the measures adopted.

“Tomorrow, at the invitation of the Prime Minister, we have a meeting of the FBiH Police Administration, FBiH Administration for Inspection Affairs and the Crisis Staff and we hope for stronger involvement of all parties in monitoring and implementing measures. The situation today is difficult but controlled. The number of deaths in the last few days shows the seriousness of the situation. The virus does not choose, which shows an increasing number of younger people who are infected, but we can decide whether we will respect the recommendations or not,” Čerkez added.

He stated that the health care system is currently responding to crisis in accordance with its capabilities, but noted that it would be disastrous if a large increase of infected people occurs in early fall, which is why he once again appealed to citizens to respect the measures.
