Christina Doctare’s Nobel Prize will serve as a warning to deniers of genocide

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO / SREBRENICA, August 5 (FENA) -  The Srebrenica Memorial Center was awarded yesterday with the Nobel Peace Prize medal, which was renounced by Swedish doctor and journalist Christina Doctare in protest of the Nobel Prize being awarded to genocide denier Peter Handke.

"We are grateful to Fadila Jašarević, Mirzet Omerović and Adnan Mahmutović, who are responsible that the medal is in Potočari today, and who were the key voices of support to realize this activity. On the way to fight for truth, symbolic messages from individuals around the world who choose to stand on the side of truth and victims in relation to Handke and others like him, who stood by the perpetrators of genocide, are extremely important," said Emir Suljagić, Director of the Srebrenica Memorial Center.

"I witnessed everything that happened 25 years ago in Srebrenica. I remember the siege, the famine, the families seeking refuge, the selection of boys and men, the shootings and killings. During the war in Bosnia, my mission was to rehabilitate war invalids. I met women survivors of systemic rape in Bosnia. That prompted me to collect victims' testimonies and work on women's rehabilitation. After the war, I had the opportunity to speak before the ICTY as an expert," Christina Doctare said in a message.

Doctare also clarified the motivation for this move.

"The peak of genocide denial happened on December 10, 2019, when the Swedish Academy awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature to Peter Handke, a well-known genocide denier. As a public protest against this insult to the victims of genocide, I decided to return the Nobel Peace Prize medal. I am now giving that medal to you, my friends. I got it in 1988 when it was given to the UN peacekeeping forces. Everyone who served received a medal. I am now leaving it to be stored in the Memorial Center along with this message of humanity and love of truth. This is just a small symbol of my struggle for the truth about genocide. Dear friends, our efforts to preserve the truth must continue. Never give up! Your truth will be with me forever", Doctare said in her message, the Srebrenica Memorial Center announced.
