SARAJEVO, July 22 (FENA) - The Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Bosnia and Herzegovina today donated personal protective medical equipment for healthcare workers in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The delivery of the donation was conducted at the storage space of the company Nelt in East Sarajevo. Head of the WHO office in BiH Victor Olsavszky said that the total weight of donated equipment for the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina is 23 tons, of which 12.6 tons is intended for FBiH, and the rest will be distributed to the entity of Republika Srpska and the Brčko District of BiH.

“We donate personal protective equipment that will eventually reach the health system, i.e., hospitals. The WHO has created a platform for donors, we estimate that we will need funds in the amount of 1.7 billion dollars by December 2020, and so far we have raised about 800 million,” said Olsavszky.

He reminded that there are currently more than 14.5 million confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in the world, and that more than 600,000 have died.

“In the last seven days in the region, the number of cases of infection has increased by 5.4 percent. Last week we had 2.956 million, and now that number has grown to three 3.14 million cases. In the Balkans and Central Asia, the number of infected has increased so much that we are concerned. We are now doing needs assessment. If this trend of increasing the number of infected people continues, these donations will be enough for some two to three months, with the addition of what the authorities themselves manage to obtain,” said Olsavszky.

He appealed to the population to adhere to all prescribed measures.

Assistant FBiH Minister of Public Health Goran Čerkez, stated that "this is another valuable donation, provided by the FBiH Ministry of Health in cooperation with our main international partner, WHO - in the fight against Covid-19."

He stressed that the donation comes at the right time, and that it is intended for the hospital sector in FBiH.

“We still have certain reserves. This will surely come in handy for the difficult autumn, which awaits us. Unfortunately, from July 13 to 20, the daily average was 145 patients. We are not satisfied with these developments, in this context we call on all the cantons to take measures to monitor, implement and adhere to the measures,” said Čerkez.
