SARAJEVO, July 11 (FENA) - Serge Brammertz, chief prosecutor for the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, called for punishment and zero tolerance for genocide denial in a video message on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the genocide committed in Serbrenica.

He says that the genocide committed in July 1995 in Srebrenica was one of the darkest moments in history in which people from the military and civilian top planned to kill more than eight thousand Srebrenica men and boys. More than 35,000 other Srebrenica residents were persecuted, terrorized and subjected to severe suffering.

The people in the Srebrenica area were practically eliminated in July 1995, Brammertz said, adding that he, as the chief prosecutor of the Hague tribunal, worked closely with the surviving victims in the fight for justice.

The stories of the survivors, the re-confrontation of the witnesses, the mothers of Srebrenica, with their pain, the confrontation of the victims with those who tried to kill them, left a deep mark on him.

When Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić were arrested, it was a significant moment for international justice, the prosecutor said.

Today's commemoration, in his opinion, should not refer only to the past, but "it is our responsibility to fight for justice and truth, against the denial of genocide."

Any denial of such a serious crime should be condemned because it is a glorification of criminals, Brammertz said, emphasizing that political leaders, especially in Republika Srpska and Serbia, continue to deny the Srebrenica genocide, although everyone is obliged to pursue a policy of zero tolerance for such actions.

"Let's mark this 25th anniversary not only in words but also in deeds," Brammertz concluded, calling for condemnation of genocide denial. That would mean marking the memory of the killed and surviving victims, of Srebrenica, he concluded in a video message.
