SARAJEVO, June 28 (FENA) - The BiH Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees has responded to the coronavirus pandemic with adequate measures to protect the most vulnerable categories of population and to help as many citizens as possible, BiH Minister of Human Rights and Refugees Miloš Lučić said in an interview with FENA.

“I took office in mid-May when the coronavirus pandemic slowed down, but its consequences, unfortunately, are still being felt. The Ministry responded to the pandemic with adequate measures in order to protect the most vulnerable categories of population and to help as many citizens as possible. Members of the Roma community have been recognized as one of the most vulnerable categories affected by the crisis caused by the pandemic, and more than 3,000 humanitarian packages have been provided for them,” he said.

Regarding the general human rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lučić said reports showed some progress in promoting and protecting human rights.

He stressed that the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees is implementing two important programs for the care of refugees and displaced persons. The donor-funded Regional Housing Program (RSP) involves the construction of 3,200 housing units, half of which have already been built. These housing units remain the permanent property of the local communities participating in the program with 20 percent of the funds through infrastructures, such as building permits, access roads, water supply networks and the like. The European Union has so far invested more than 60 million euros in this project and is the largest donor to the RSP.

“There is still a lot to be done in order to provide dignified living conditions for the refugee population as the most vulnerable category of the population. We still have a large number of people who have not resolved their status, and these are the most socially endangered categories,” he said.

Asked about cooperation with religious communities, how they can contribute to reconciliation, and the problem of agreement with the Islamic Community in BiH, Lučić said that he had talked with Metropolitan Hrizostom of the Metropolitanate of Dabar-Bosna of the Serb Orthodox Church and Apostolic Nuncio to BiH, Monsignor Luigi Pezzuto, and will visit soon representatives of the Islamic Community of BiH.

“The state of Bosnia and Herzegovina has signed international agreements with the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Holy See, and now it is time to form joint commissions that will work on the implementation and enforcement of these agreements. The agreement with the Islamic Community of BiH has not been signed and that is one of the issues we will open at the upcoming meeting. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a complex state and we may or may not agree on certain issues, but we must always talk because the dialogue is the only way to reconciliation, forgiveness and finding a solution. I plan to meet soon with members of the Interreligious Council of BiH, which is one of the key bodies for promoting and affirming interreligious dialogue, mutual understanding and building a better future for all,” said in an interview with FENA BiH Minister of Human Rights and Refugees Milos Lučić, adding that he will soon visit the Jewish community in BiH.
