SARAJEVO, June 5 (FENA) - According to the statistics collected from the competent institutions, there were 3,531 traffic accidents on the roads of Bosnia and Herzegovina in March and April 2020, which is a decrease of 1,831 traffic accidents compared to the same period in 2019, or 33.4 percent.

Maja Domazet-Čupović from the Traffic Safety Department at BIHAMK said in a statement for FENA that in the period of the state of emergency caused by coronavirus, 29 people died on the roads in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while in the same period in 2019, 47 people died, which is a decrease of 38.3 percent.

“In that period in 2020, 140 people suffered serious injuries, while in 2019, 231 people were seriously injured, which is a decrease of 40 percent,” added Domazet-Čupović.

Observing the said data, it is visible that the number of traffic accidents and their consequences has significantly decreased in the period March-April 2020, compared to the same period last year.

However, she underlined, if we take into account the frequency of road traffic this year compared to last year, which was estimated to be significantly lower due to restrictive measures on movement, it can be said with certainty that the number of accidents, as well as deaths and injured persons in relation to the average daily traffic, has been significantly higher than last year.

“Based on media reports after declaring the end of state of emergency in BiH, we noticed that there have been a significant number of people being killed in traffic accidents, and we appeal to drivers to drive carefully and respect traffic rules and regulations,” she added.

When it comes to the number of traffic accidents and the number of fatalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina in relation to the region and the European Union, BiH is at the very top of those statistics.

“Statistically speaking, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, about 70 people die in traffic accidents per million inhabitants, while the European standard is 48 deaths per million inhabitants,” concluded Maja Domazet-Čupović from the Traffic Safety Department at BIHAMK.
