Bjelica-Prutina and Kavalec discuss importance of transparency in CEC's work

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 30 (FENA) - As of today, after the test period, the public in Bosnia and Herzegovina can watch the sessions of the BiH Central Election Commission (CEC BiH) via live stream on the website www.izbori.ba.

It is the result of a collaboration between the BiH Central Election Commission and the OSCE Mission to BiH.

On this occasion, the CEC BiH President Vanja Bjelica-Prutina and the Head of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec made statements for the media, emphasizing the importance of transparency of the CEC's work and the electoral process.

"It is my great pleasure that today, as President of the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina, I can announce that, thanks to the support of the OSCE Mission to BiH, the public will have the opportunity to watch CEC BiH sessions via live streaming," said Bjelica-Prutina.

She recalled that the sessions of the BiH Central Election Commission are open for the public, stating that as of today they would indeed be that, in the true sense of the word, and that this was especially significant in the current situation when, on the one hand, measures taken by the competent authorities for the COVID-19 epidemic were in force, on the other hand, the CEC is conducting significant activities in connection to the announcement of elections in BiH.

"It is our wish that in this way we increase transparency in our work and that the public has direct insight into the work of the CEC BiH and all decisions it makes. I believe that it will receive a positive reaction in the public space as this is the key institution for organizing and conducting democratic elections," said the CEC president.

She especially thanked Ambassador Kavalec and the OSCE Mission to BiH "which, as many times before, have been a partner to the BiH Central Election Commission in the implementation of specific projects."

"I believe that our successful cooperation will continue. I take the opportunity to announce that CEC BiH has activated an official account on Twitter https://twitter.com/IZBORI_BA

Follow us and find out about the elections in BiH and the world, Bjelica-Prutina added.

At the same time, Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec, Head of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasized the importance of transparency of the election process.

"Recognizing the fact that citizens' trust in democratic institutions in BiH is very low, the OSCE Mission to BiH continues to support the efforts of the Central Election Commission to make its work more transparent and accessible to the public," Kavalec emphasized.

She specified that by introducing the practice of live streaming the sessions of the CEC BiH, through the CEC YouTube channel, available on the CEC BiH website, the media and the general public will have an insight into the work and decision-making of one of the most important democratic institutions in BiH.

"In this way, the Central Election Commission, with the support of the OSCE Mission to BiH, implements one of the very important OSCE/ODIHR recommendations on opening CEC sessions to the public and the media.

The OSCE Mission to BiH will continue to support the work of the Central Election Commission and support the efforts of the electoral administration and other institutions to make their work visible to the public in order to achieve greater transparency," said Ambassador Kavalec, the CEC BiH Information Office announced.
