SARAJEVO, April 26 (FENA) - On the occasion of April 26, World Renewable Energy Day, President of the BiH branch of the International Council for Large Power Systems (BHO CIGRE), Edhem Bičakčić, said that Bosnia and Herzegovina should produce 40 percent of electricity from renewable sources by 2035.

“In order to reach this very ambitious strategic goal, BiH should invest around KM 220 million every year in the construction of small hydro power plant, wind farm, photovoltaic power stations and biofuels power plants,” said Bičakčić for FENA.

According to the proposal of the BiH State Energy Strategy, he added that starting from 2020, BiH would build new capacities with a total capacity of 120 megawatts each year. The strategy envisages that the installed capacity of small hydropower plants from the current 180 megawatts will be increased to 400 MW by 2035. The existing power of 50 MW photovoltaic power plants should be increased to as much as 700 MW and wind farms from 140 MW to 1,000 MW. For biofuel power plants, this growth would reach 30 MW from the current 10 MW.

“For the realization of this plan we have extraordinary natural conditions, the necessary knowledge in preparation and realization and the happy circumstance that investors have a great interest in investing in the energy sector,” said Bičakčić.

World Renewable Energy Day is marked annually on 26 April with the aim of raising awareness of the need for research and application of renewable energy sources - wind, sun, water, biomass, and geothermal resources. It has been marked after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster that occurred on April 26, 1986, and has since been a reminder of the limited and problematic use of non-renewable resources and atomic energy.

Keeping in mind all these facts security of energy supply, energy systems, ensuring the stability and predictability of energy policies, as well as managing energy resources, are a prerequisite for fundamental functioning, as well as for achieving economic growth and development of each country.
