AHMIĆI, April 16 (FENA) - Today in Ahmići, we remember and pay our respects to 116 tortured and killed citizens and we will never forget them, BiH Presidency Chairman Šefik Džaferović said today, as he took part in the marking of the 27th anniversary of the massacre in Ahmići where members of the Croat Defense Council (HVO) killed 116 Bosniak civilians.

Džaferović called this crime against humanity a genocide against Ahmići residents and added that he would always fight for truth and justice.

“The fact that all the bodies have still not been found and dignifiedly buried and that the direct perpetrators have not been prosecuted at all is a great pain for both Ahmići and BiH residents,” Džaferović said.

He stressed that it is especially painful that those convicted before the Hague Tribunal who led the operation are today treated in a society in a way they should not be, because they are celebrated and honored.

“This is not the way to restore confidence. Victims should be treated primarily in a civilized manner,” Džaferović concluded.

Marking of the 27th anniversary of the Ahmići crime, numerous delegations laid wreaths and flowers at the memorial, including Federation of BiH Vice President Melika Mahmutbegović and Central Bosnia Canton Prime Minister Tahir Lendo.

The families of the killed Ahmići residents warned today that the remains of 29 victims have never been found and that not all those responsible for the crime have been prosecuted.

Six persons have been convicted of Ahmići crime, five of which were handed down by The Hague tribunal (ICTY), including a sentence of 25 years in prison for Dario Kordić, who was released after serving two-thirds of his sentence, while the Court of BiH convicted Paško Ljubičić to ten years in prison.

In this village, 116 Bosniak civilians were killed 27 years ago. The youngest victim in Ahmići on April 16, 1993 was three months old baby, and the village was completely destroyed.
