Košarac and Sabolić discuss the contested issue of Trgovska gora site

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 2 (FENA) - Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH, Staša Košarac spoke today with Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ivan Sabolić about the country's intention to build a radioactive and nuclear waste disposal location at the Trgovska gora site, in the immediate vicinity of the border with BiH.

Košarac initiated an emergency meeting with Sabolić after information emerged in the media that the Croatian Ministry of Environment and Energy has given the site of the former military warehouse in the municipality of Dvor to the Fund for financing the decommissioning and disposal of radioactive waste from the Krško nuclear power plant.

At today's meeting, Ambassador Sabolić officially informed Minister Košarac that the relevant ministry of Croatia has ceded the location to the said Fund for the preparation of the environmental impact study, and that investigative works will be carried out as a basis for the study, with zero radiological status and security analyses.

The ambassador emphasized that Croatia is committed to respecting the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (ESPOO), which, inter alia, obliges it to cooperate with all interested parties, in this case with BiH. Accordingly, BiH will, based on its expertise, provide its comments on the preparation of the EIA.

At today's meeting, the two pointed out the need for Minister Košarac and Minister of Environment and Energy of Croatia Tomislav Čorić to get in touch as soon as possible on this matter. In this regard, it was agreed that, next week, the two ministers in charge would hold a telephone or Skype meeting, taking into account the current epidemiological situation caused by the spread of coronavirus.

Košarac reiterated the official position of the competent institutions at all levels of government in BiH, that the eventual building of a radioactive and nuclear waste landfill at Trgovska gora would be completely unacceptable, as it would endanger the health of 250,000 inhabitants in 13 municipalities in the Una River Basin and have a negative environmental impact.

He emphasized that, in accordance with the conclusions of the relevant institutions in BiH, they would work to prove the harmfulness of the construction of the disputed facility, and that he would demand that all institutions in BiH be active and mobilized in seeking arguments in favor of the official position of BiH.
