FBiH Government declares state of emergency over coronavirus epidemic

SARAJEVO, March 16 (FENA) - The Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina has declared the state of emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19), as an adequate response to the current situation and allows all necessary steps to be made, confirmed today Prime Minister of the Federation of BiH Fadil Novalić following an expanded session of the Government.

Also, a decision has been made to limit the prices of certain products at the same level as recorded on March 5, and the BiH Council of Ministers, as well as the BiH Parliamentary Assembly, have been asked to amend the Law on Public Procurement to ensure exemption for the procurement of medical equipment and disinfectants as well as other necessities to combat the spread of coronavirus.

Novalić stressed that numerous recommendations for mitigating the economic consequences have been adopted and that the Banking Agency is tasked with adopting all necessary by-laws in order to protect the banking sector from the consequences.

He announced a session of the FBiH Government on Thursday, March 19, when other measures such as the introduction of tax breaks for the most vulnerable categories of society would be considered and state-level opportunities for access to international financial institutions.

"A number of recommendations have been made for employers, such as allowing one parent to be away from work since children do not go to school. We welcome BH Telecom's decision to facilitate online classes to run smoothly, which is an example of how socially responsible companies operate," said Novalić.

All these measures should mitigate the effects of the pandemic and are aimed at protecting the population and preserving the liquidity of the economy.

There are currently four confirmed cases of Covid-19 virus infection in the Federation of BiH, with 20 in the entity of Republika Srpska, while 2,000 people are under medical supervision.

Novalić convened an expanded session of the Government with a view to reviewing the overall situation in the Federation of BiH regarding the impact of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) on human health and the economy.

In addition to members of the FBiH Government, the meeting was also attended by the leaders of the Federation of Employers of the FBiH, the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of BiH, the FBiH Chamber of Commerce, the FBiH Tax Administration, the FBiH Police Administration, the FBiH  Civil ProtectionAdministration, the FBiH Administration for Inspection Affairs, the FBiH Institute for Development Programming, the FBiH Directorate for Commodity Reserves, the FBiH Red Cross and the FBiH Ministry of Health Crisis Staff.
