FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 10 (FENA) - BiH Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Josip Brkić, participated in a meeting of foreign ministers of the Berlin Process in Skopje, aimed at boosting regional cooperation among Western Balkan countries and accelerating their accession to the European Union.

The meeting was held under the joint chairmanship of the Republic of North Macedonia and the Republic of Bulgaria in the Berlin Process.

The need for continued reforms in the Western Balkan countries as well as stronger regional cooperation in light of European integration was highlighted at the meeting.

In his address at the plenary session, which represented informal meeting of EU foreign ministers (Gymnich), Deputy Brkić talked about the EU perspective of the Western Balkans that enlargement is the strongest EU tool to promote and strengthen security, stability and prosperity.

He stressed that the EU, formally committed to the Thessaloniki Agenda, has invested significant political, economic and symbolic capital in this region.

Deputy Brkić emphasized that EU member states should not hesitate about the prospect of joining the Western Balkans once the conditions are met.

“We all hope here that we will see a clear signal to start the EU accession talks with our friends from North Macedonia and Albania. Bosnia and Herzegovina hopes to be granted candidate status in the near future. We look forward to the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Zagreb in May as well as the Berlin Process Summit in Sofia by the end of the year as these are important gatherings that give a strong and credible message that the future of the Western Balkans is in the EU,” said Brkić, adding that the region must continue to work hard on the path to full EU membership.

Deputy Brkić participated in a panel on the rule of law, migration, security and threats within the forum.

On the sidelines of the meeting in Skopje, with other brief bilateral meetings, Deputy Brkić met with Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development Wendy Morton. They discussed the current political situation in BiH, Euro-Atlantic integration, the upcoming visit of the Prince of Wales to BiH, trade negotiations after Brexit and BiH's support for the candidacy of a British judge in the International Criminal Court, PR Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
