There are currently 76 AFBiH members in peacekeeping missions around the world

SARAJEVO, March 1 (FENA) - Celebrating BiH Independence Day - March 1, solemnly and reminding of the historic significance of that date, is an opportunity to summarize the results of building and strengthening of the state institutions, 28 years since independence.

According to the relevant stakeholders, one of the most significant achievements in the reform and strengthening of state attributes in the mentioned period is the organization of the unified Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AFBiH) and successful reform of the defense sector.

Particularly recognizable in this context is the contribution of AFBiH members to peacekeeping missions around the world, which has made Bosnia and Herzegovina from a consuming country / entity a country-entity / provider of international military assistance.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, in line with its capabilities, integrates its defense potentials and functions into the global system of collective security, on the basis of international cooperation, engagement and partnership, by offering quality capacities and capabilities to participate in peacekeeping missions, the BiH Ministry of Defense BiH (BiH MoD) stated for FENA.

According to the BiH MoD, a total of 1,650 AFBiH personnel have been engaged in peacekeeping operations to date, of which 83 are women members of the BiH Armed Forces.

The current situation in this area is characterized by the participation of AFBiH members in the performance of various tasks within the four peacekeeping missions.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has been involved with military observers in the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo - MONUSCO since 2002, and there are three military observers in the mission within the 18th rotation. These are rotations lasting 12 months each, according to the BiH MoD.

They further state that, since 2014, BiH has been participating in the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Republic of Mali - MINUSMA, with staff officers, and the sixth one-year rotation of staff officers is currently in this operation (two staff officers, one of whom is a woman).

NATO-led peace support operation "Resolute Support" in IR Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, has also been participating since 2014, with the eleventh rotation of AFBiH members - the infantry force security unit (total of 45 professional military personnel), as well as the eleventh rotation of staff officers (eight officers), and tenth rotation of staff officers (two non-commissioned officers).

The first rotation of the EOD team (five-member team for the destruction of explosive devices) and the fifth rotation of military police officers (eight professional military personnel) members of the AFBiH, so a total of 68 AFBiH members, including eight women, are currently engaged in the "Resolute Support" mission in Afghanistan as part of six-month rotations.

Also, in the European Union (EU) training mission in the Central African Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina has been participating with its staff since 2017, and currently, there is a sixth rotation of the staff. In that six-month mission, a total of three AFBiH members were deployed, two of them are women.

A total of 76 AFBiH personnel are currently engaged in peace support missions, military observers, staff officers and NCOs, units for the protection of forces, military police missions and missions for the destruction of explosive devices, 11 of which are women, BiH Ministry od Defense stated.
