SARAJEVO, February 24 (FENA) – Swedish Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Johanna Strömquist met today in Sarajevo with Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH Staša Košarac, FBiH Minister of Environment and Tourism Edita Djapo and Minister of Physical Planning, Construction and Ecology of the Republika of Srpska Srebrenka Golić to discuss current situation and air pollution solutions.

“Sweden is the largest bilateral donor in the field of climate change and environmental protection in BiH. Last year, we donated about eight million euros in these areas. We will continue to support these areas,” said Ambassador Strömquist.

Today's meeting is the first step to seriously and systematically address the problem of air pollution in BiH. They discussed all measures that will be taken in the coming period by the relevant ministries and the Embassy of Sweden in BiH.

“The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations will play a coordinating role. I required the associates to pay special attention to environmental protection when planning the funds. From this point of view, we will coordinate all other policies that are manifested through acts of relevant entity ministries. In this context, we are encouraged that financial institutions want to help BiH address the issue of air pollution,” Košarac said.

He thanked Sweden, which has supported the implementation of environmental projects.

The Federation of BiH is responsible for monitoring air quality. The FBiH Meteorological Institute last year released an air quality index that shows citizens the quality of air. In the FBiH, we are working to improve the filters. The ArcelorMittal heating plant will reduce 70 percent of sulfur dioxide in Zenica. A replacement Block 7 is planned in Tuzla to improve the quality of air. In Sarajevo, we have various policies for improving public transport, and we need to see how to solve the problem of individual fireboxes,” said Minister Djapo.

Minister Golić announced the development of an environmental strategy in which one area deals only with air quality.

“BiH delegation will visit Stockholm in early April. Swedish experts will guide us on how we will regulate this issue in our area,” Golić announced after a meeting at the Swedish Embassy.

In cooperation with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), a project is being implemented aimed at improving the quality analysis, monitoring and management of air quality in BiH. Sweden also supports the work of local institutions in developing an environmental plan for the whole of BiH.
