SARAJEVO, February 6 (FENA) - Dean of the Faculty of Economics, University of Sarajevo (EFSA) Jasmina Selimović and Director of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) at the US Embassy, Benjamin Rockwell today in Sarajevo opened the Center for Forensic Accounting (CFA) in BiH, which will be the meeting place for professional accountants, training forensic accountants, and solving numerous problems that threaten the operations of business entities in BiH.

The CFA has been established as part of a three-year project entitled “Capacity Building for Forensic Accounting in BiH”, which is being implemented in cooperation with EFSA and the US Government.

The aim is to support EFSA in the development of sustainable education programs in the field of forensic accounting, which include a professional certification program for forensic accountants in BiH, as well as a two-year master’s program in Forensic Accounting and Investigation.

Forensic accountants, says Dean Selimović, will be qualified experts that will be trained in the fight against fraud and corruption, in the fight against domestic and international organized crime, and as such will provide adequate support to prosecutors, judges and defense attorneys in their work, contributing increasing citizens' confidence in the BiH judicial system.

Currently, in the Federation of BiH, there is no possibility of obtaining a professional title of a forensic accountant, and at the state level, there is no possibility of obtaining a university diploma of the first or second education cycle in the field of forensic accounting.

Rockwell said that the opening of the center represents a step in the right direction.

"The United States is committed to a prosperous and secure future for BiH citizens, and even more should be done to prevent corruption and financial crime and identify it when it happens," Rockwell said.

Speaking about how forensic accounting can help fight corruption and financial crime, Rockwell said that forensic accountants can help companies and public entities design accounting and auditing systems that reduce the risk of fraud, and can test organizations' financial statements for possible fraud, research and analyze financial evidence, and contribute to the development of computerized applications to identify problematic transactions or fraudulent accounting, etc.

Forensic accountants can be persons employed by insurance companies, banks, police institutions or public accounting firms that work on preventing, identifying and combating financial crime and corruption.
