Borovac: BiH has made progress in the promotion and protection of human rights

SARAJEVO, December 10 (FENA) - Minister of Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina Semiha Borovac said in Sarajevo today that she was satisfied with the UN Human Rights Committee's assessment of the third cycle of the Universal Human Rights Review and that all 76 countries assessing the situation without reserve supported the progress in BiH.

Borovac added that it was assessed that BiH has achieved success in terms of promotion and protection of human rights over the previous period, but that many commitments remained to be made by BiH in accordance with the given recommendations.

She emphasized that the Committee has made 207 recommendations to which the BiH authorities should respond and that today, on the occasion of International Human Rights Day, we seek to promote those recommendations together with the institutions obliged to implement those decisions as well as representatives of civil society.

Speaking about the recommendations, Borovac said that they mostly relate to the implementation of the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, especially in the Sejdić-Finci case, followed by the participation of BiH citizens in political life in relation to the electoral process, anti-discrimination policies to be adopted at the state level, full implementation of the Anti-Discrimination Law, recommendations regarding the social protection of civilian victims of war and disabled veterans of war, assistance to marginalized groups and other recommendations repeated from the previous cycle.

Borovac recalled that human rights and international humanitarian rights were massively violated in BiH in the 1990s, but that today BiH is a signatory to a number of major international human rights instruments.

She noted that BiH is among the countries with the fewest recommendations, given that Italy received more than 400.

“We are aware that, 24 years after the war, there are violations of human rights of constituent peoples and citizens of BiH, and that there is a strong willingness to improve the state of respect for human rights in BiH,” said Borovac, adding that this can be achieved in a way that the recommendations are put into implementation from day one, as BiH will have to submit a report on the human rights situation again in four years.

For this reason, Borovac added that she would present today all the recommendations they have received in the field of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights and will find, together with the non-governmental sector, the best solutions and ways of implementation.

Borovac noted that she was aware of the fact that the overall progress towards BiH's accession to the EU would be measured precisely through the degree of improvement of human rights, and emphasized the need for organized, synchronized and coordinated work on recommendations that will surely bring benefits for BiH citizens.
