SARAJEVO, December 3 (FENA) - A conference on "Good practice examples of cooperation between organizations of persons with disabilities and local communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina" is being held today in Sarajevo on the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, with the aim of highlighting the importance of cooperation of local communities with associations of persons with disabilities in dialogue and examples of good practice in order to improve the quality of life of them and their families.

Deputy Minister of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH Predrag Jović opened the conference, and said that the Ministry, together with the Council of Persons with Disabilities of BiH, marks this important date every year and selects topics of importance for persons with disabilities.

"This year we have decided on a conference where the focus of cooperation of local communities with the non-governmental sector dealing with human rights in the field of persons with disabilities. We all need to have a sensibility and a sense of things like this, each of us should have a human-centered approach, but also to adapt to European standards and keep up with Europe," said Jović.

Secretary of the Council of Persons with Disabilities of BiH Elvira Bešlija stated that she is partly satisfied that the Council was established at first and that various organizations of persons with disabilities are formed at the lower levels, which, in cooperation with all levels of government, are trying to resolve issues of this population.

"But basically, as a disabled person, I am not satisfied. An example that is always present and which is by no means resolved is the issue of accessibility, which has been properly addressed through our legislation, but is not applied in practice as it should be. That's one example," said Bešlija.

She noted that people with disabilities need to live quality lives like others. However, she adds that it is difficult because there are still stereotypes and discrimination.

"The realization of the human rights of persons with disabilities is difficult and slow. We need support, not just on December 3, we need support every day," said Bešlija.
